Checked baggage is the luggage one travels with that is stored in the cargo hold of an aircraft. It has certain rules governing the limitations on the amount and type of items that are allowed on board. These are known as ‘checked baggage rules’. Generally, items which can be dangerous, like acids, fireworks, lighter fluid, ammunition are prohibited on a flight.

Each airline has different baggage allowances set for the weight limit on suitcases, the size and the number of suitcases that one can bring along depending on the cabin class of travel and the route.

If a passenger exceeds the allowed baggage limit, excess baggage fees are imposed. Excess baggage can also be brought from the airline beforehand.

When chartering a plane, checked baggage rules are not imposed on the passenger. Instead, the baggage allowance depends mainly on the type of aircraft, passenger capacity and so on.

The checked baggage rules can be found on the airline’s website that one wishes to travel with.
